Now that the “Destiny Reveal Stream” is over and an official press release has been sent out some of our questions revolving around the new Destiny: Rise of Iron expansion have been answered. As mentioned in my previous post, we know that this expansion will include:
- New story campaign and quests
- New Armor and Gear
- New Weapons
- New Raid
- New Strike
- Maximum Light Increase
- New Plaguelands Zone & Social Space (Feltwinter Peak)
- New Crucible Mode & Maps
- New Enemy Faction and Bosses
Although previously speculated upon, it is confirmed now that the new expansion will have players fight alongside the Iron Lords as they take on a once thought to be contained plague of mutated Fallen. This new threat will be combated within the new Plaguelands Zone which appears to similar to the Cosmodrome in environment. From the reveal trailer, it seems that the area will be predominantly snowy surrounded by old Soviet-era looking buildings akin to where we would expect to find the Fallen (the non-mutated ones).
It was also officially announced that the new expansion will not be released for the PS3 or Xbox 360. Instead, Bungie opted to take a page out of the multiverse theory.
Until August 2016, all characters and career progression will remain linked irrespective of whether they are on the PS3/Xbox 360 or PS4/Xbox One respectively. After August, character progress on the old gen consoles will no longer be shared with the current gen. Instead your character’s growth will follow two separate parallel paths.
In a nutshell, this means that all progress made on the old and current gen will remain exclusively on their respective generation of consoles. However, players who upgrade to the current gen will be able to port their existing characters to the PS4/Xbox One after August.
This makes sense since it appears that Bungie will no longer be releasing new content for the PS3/Xbox 360, and this will allow players on the old gen consoles to continue playing Destiny; albeit they’re destined to progress no further.
On a brighter note, you remember our favourite Norse weapon? No, not Mjölnir. The Gjallarhorn is making its triumphant return to Destiny! If you pre-order Destiny: Rise of Iron, you will receive a limited-edition black and silver Iron Gjallarhorn (after completing quests to forge it).
Not going to lie, getting a Gjallarhorn straight up is pretty sweet. Especially considering all the time I spent in the game and not once being able to get my hands on the oh so mythical and legendary rocket launcher (/bow). Instead, I faced discrimination and rejection from PUGs for something that was completely beyond my control. On top of that, I had to witness my so-called friends pour salt into my wounds as they carried out unthinkable acts of cruelty.
Sad times they were.
Destiny: Rise of Iron will be released September 20th for $29.99USD on the PS4 and Xbox One.
