This week features a lot of news from our friends over at Nintendo. On this week’s Speculation Station we have:
- Ubisoft releasing a new IP
- Nintendo NX Raw Power Closer to Xbox One
- Consoles will eventually be replaced by streaming, Ubisoft CEO
- Nintendo getting into the movie business
- Resident Evil 7 to bring series back to its ‘horror roots,’ to appear at E3 2016
- Destiny “Rise of Iron” may be the new upcoming expansion
1. Ubisoft releasing a new IP
Ubisoft began talking about a new IP last February. Little tidbits were hinted at with the game revolving around multi-player, but still having a strong single player campaign (Rainbow Seven? The Subtraction? Sliver Cell?). The reveal is expected to happen “before” E3 (most likely a teaser trailer), with a strong showing at E3 itself.
2. Nintendo NX Raw Power Closer to Xbox One
Rumours circulating the web that Nintendo’s new console, the Nintendo NX, is using an AMD Polaris GPU – and in turn being twice as powerful as the PS4 GPU. This has been stated as incorrect according to Nintendo Insider Emily Rogers. She claims that the raw power of the NX will be closer to that of the Xbox One – so half the power of a PS4! (Sorry, I admit I’m a PS loyalist and could not resist).
3. Consoles will eventually be replaced by streaming, Ubisoft CEO
Gaming consoles as we know it in its traditional form may be on its way out according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. He expects the physical consoles to be taken over by a streaming service in the future.
“We believe in streaming–it demands lots of bandwidth. We think it’s going to grow but today, with the types of games we have, it will still take a bit of time to be more popular.” he said. Who knows, maybe Netflix and chillin’ will become a thing of the past.
4. Nintendo getting into the movie business
Do you remember the Super Mario movie from 1993? You probably don’t, hell, I don’t either. It did poorly in the box office, and was ultimately forgettable. Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima said in a recent interview that they are getting into the movie business. This time they are looking at a production system where “we can do as much as we can ourselves.” instead of just licensing something. Kimishima hopes that they would have their first movie ready within 2-3 years. I just really hope that it isn’t live action…..
5. Resident Evil 7 to bring series back to its ‘horror roots,’ to appear at E3 2016
Resident Evil fans rejoice! With the last installment of the Resident Evil series scoring poorly, Capcom has hired designer Jordan Amaro (part of the team that worked on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain) to work on this game. Japanese analyst Serkan Toto revealed that the series will go back to its ‘horror roots’ – with plenty of new info to come at E3. So whatcha buying? Hopefully this game, don’t let me down!
6. Destiny “Rise of Iron” may be the new upcoming expansion
Kotaku has confirmed through its Bungie inside sources that Rise of Iron will be the next expansion. Pictures leaked on Reddit of a seemingly official promotional posters Destiny “Rise of Iron” appear to support this report. I would get into more depth, but unfortunately as the saying goes “I don’t have time to explain why I don’t have time to explain.”
