Pokemon Go Update Live – Buddy System, Get Pikachu to Jump on Shoulder
This week, Niantic rolled out the new Pokemon Go update including the buddy system, and some minor bug fixes.
Here is what you need to know:
- Buddy system walk kms to earn candy
- Get Pikachu to jump on your shoulder easter egg!
- No support for jailbroken or rooted phones
- Fixed minor bugs
- Pokemon Go Plus Support
You can now choose one of your Pokemon to be your buddy. This can be done through your profile page where journal and customize are also available. Once your buddy is chosen, they will appear only in your profile image and during the map as a circle image next to your level number.
The buddy system allows you to walk kms to earn candy to evolve or power up your Pokemon. With a few exceptions (I’ve noticed bulbasaur and oddish so far), it seems that the number of kms needed to earn one candy is related to the eggs that they can hatch from. Pokemon that hatch from 2 km eggs require 1 km of walking to earn one candy, 5 km egg Pokemon require 3 kms of walking to earn one candy, and 10 km Pokemon require 5 kms of walking to each one candy of the associated buddy. For a full list of km:candy ratio for all Pokemon check out TheSilphRoach chart. One important thing to note is that if you switch you buddy before reaching the goal km to get one candy, you will have to restart kms for the Pokemon if you want to change back. Km progress is not saved when switching between Pokemon buddies. You also can not battle with your buddy Pokemon at gyms.
This feature will be useful in gaining more candy to evolve or power up Pokemon that are hard to find in your area. Although let’s be honest…. it’s going to take you a long time (and a lot of walking) at that km:candy ratio.
Get Pikachu to Jump on your Shoulder – Easter Egg With New Update
It has been reported that you can now fulfill your Pokemon dreams more than ever before. If you walk 10 kms with Pikachu as your buddy, he will move on up to your shoulder on the character display page.
We are thinking that this may also be possible with other small Pokemon as well, although not yet confirmed. Make sure to tweet @tetraninja if you get another Pokemon to cuddle with you.
New Update Will Not Work on Jailbroken or Rooted Phones
In a battle to prevent bots from playing Pokemon Go, the latest update will prevent those from jailbroken and rooted phones from playing the game.
Fixed Minor Bugs
As will all updates, this one fixed a few minor bugs. Notably, if fixed a bug that may allow your eggs to hatch without any animation or notification. So now you’ll never miss out on your 10 km egg hatching a Jinx or your 1000th Pidgey hatch. Hurrah!
style=”text-align: left;”>Pokemon Go Plus Support
This update features support for Pokemon Go Plus, which uses a small bracelet device that hooks up to your phone and allows you to check in at stops with a simple push of a button. It will also alert you to Pokemon spawning at your location with LED lights and vibration. The device comes out September 16th- this Friday. We will bring you more information on it’s features then.
