Hey all! Tech Tuesday is back! Apologies for not being here last week,
my Note 7 exploded I’ve been super busy with sponsored projects for my channel. Let’s get caught up on all the awesome news!
This week’s tech news includes the following:
1. Longer Tweets Are Here!
Twitter has began rolling out changes that stop extraneous content – media, links, @replies – from counting against the character limit in tweets.
Say more about what's happening! Rolling out now: photos, videos, GIFs, polls, and Quote Tweets no longer count toward your 140 characters. pic.twitter.com/I9pUC0NdZC

I’m super stoked for this as it is certainly something I’ve been asking for. I don’t mind having a character limit, I just hate it when links and images count against the limit.
This is a roll-out change, so it may not immediately work for you. Give it time.
2. iPhone 7 Destroys Galaxy Note 7
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus released last week, inspiring many videos comparing it to other top-of-the-line smartphones on the market.
Battery-exploding issues aside, the iPhone 7 seems to run laps around the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. This is pretty crazy to see. The iPhone 7 is a faster smartphone, but the Note 7 is still a pretty beefy phone. Most users will likely never notice an experience where it feels that the Note 7 is “slow.”
The big difference mainly comes down to iOS’s optimization on the iPhone, but it’s still an interesting comparison.
3. Lots of New Cameras
There were a LOT of new camera announcements over the past week.
Panasonic GH5 just got announced, and it'll shoot 6K video @ 30fps… OK I see you Panasonic! pic.twitter.com/PjmzAMssSx

I have to say, I’ve joined the hype train on the Panasonic Lumix GH5. I need this camera in my life!
Camera announcement highlights:
- Fujifilm announces mirrorless medium format 51.4 megapixel camera (read more)
- Nikon announces new “Keymission” line of rugged action cameras (read more)
- Sony announces A99 II DSLR that can shoot 12 FPS at 32.4 megapixels (HOLY CRAP! read more)
- Hassleblad announces special edition, all-black “4116” of their X1D camera (read more)
- GoPro announces Hero 5 Black and Hero 5 Session – 4K action cameras (read more)
- GoPro also announces “Karma” drone for $800 that fits in a backpack (read more)
I totally geek out when it comes to camera gear and this is like a candy shop… so many great announcements at once. I still want that GH5, although the A99 is also looking nice!
4. Adblock Plus Sells Ads
The internet went into a kind of uproar upon the announcement that Adblock Plus – the web extension known for doing everything possible to block ads on any site on the web – would be introducing the “Acceptable Ads initiative” and actually selling ad space on websites through their extension.
…even as I wrote that out, I had to just facepalm.
Adblock Plus says they have been running this platform for 5 years and are only just now opening it up to the public. But either way, it sounds like extortion – a site either needs to pay to have their ads shown through the extension, or the ads will be blocked or replaced. Very strange.
5. Facebook Buys Modular Tech Company
Nascent Objects is a modular electronics startup founded in 2014, and they have just been acquired by Facebook.

I actually worked with their team to help promote their Indiegogo campaign a while back, so this is neat to see. They were working on what they called the “world’s first modular consumer electronics platform.”
Now, Nascent will join Facebook’s Building 8 lab – a new hardware facility that Facebook is making big pushes to support.

6. Cub Linux Picks Up Chrome OS’s Ashes
Well, a new Linux distro aims to blend the simplicity of Chrome OS with the functionality of a traditional Linux desktop environment (specifically Ubuntu) in the form of Cub Linux.
You can read more about it over on TechNewsWorld, but this looks like a very, very neat project and I’m pretty excited to play around with it in a virtual machine when I have time.
That’s all there is for this week!
